Coir floor covers are made from the fibres found between the shell and the outer husk of coconuts.  The fibres are graded and spun into yarn much like wool is and then woven into matting(carpet). It was in the 1980's a cheap floor covering but as demand for the raw fibres has increased for other product the cost has risen. However the cost compared to sisal is still relatively lower.
